Candy Skin | Behind-the-scenes

It’s been years since I’ve been behind the camera from a videographer perspective. When I mentioned to my old high school friend and Director, Kyle, about a chance to work with him again he was happy to have me apart of the team.

A short film, Candy Skin, has been submitted into multiple festivals and we’re very excited of the success it has so far. Hiring professional actors and make up artist “On Scene FX” we were definitely on our way to creating something truly wonderful. Regretfully, I can’t show you everything I’d like without giving too much away. When the film is ready to formally be released I may update this.

I was in charge of behind the scene photography and videography. Today I am just sharing the photos with you all and can’t wait to share more with you later!

On Scene FX works on our main character

Main character shots

Close up of the incredible make up work on his hands, we’ll never tell you why! (until you see the movie, that is!)

One of our locations, an old barn with a lot of character. Also featuring Kyle, our director, in action!

Some other characters are being introduced!

Our main character undergoes some serious facial reconstruction while one of our other characters starts transforming into his character.

We have some slightly less bloody shots too!

With all sorts of Director shots, I’ll end with these!

I look forward to sharing more with you in the future. In the meantime, Enjoy!

The Annual Cottage Trip | July 2016

With a usually larger than normal group at our annual trip to our friend Cory’s cottage, we sized down and had a more intimate group this year. These best friends had a good time. I took over 900 photos, managed to size down to 100 edited photos and I’ll highlight the best of those on here for all to enjoy!

Thanks for taking the time to scroll through our weekend! We had a wonderful time!

Laura Kelly Photography | Workshop

In March I had attended my first photography workshop. With camera in tow, I was very excited to learn more about my lenses and shooting in manual.

Time to step it up a notch, Jenn!

When my own wedding photographer Laura Kelly posted that she was hosting her first workshop I didn’t even hesitate to sign up. I have been following Laura’s blog (both wedding and personal) since before I was married, and even 3 years later, I still love to know what’s going on in her exciting life! Her business has grown exponentially since I was a Laura Kelly bride, and I am so happy and excited for her!

She really went into detail about shooting in front and behind natural light, understanding our camera’s numbers (and what they mean), and helping us however we need it. Since this event was a few months ago, I am pleased to say I have gotten even better since… practice makes perfect! 🙂

Who couldn’t resist Wheezy’s charm? 😉

Laura had many beautiful things in her living spaces that had different lighting opportunities to take photos of.

I really had a great time and definitely practiced what I learned from her workshop. I would recommend checking out her blog post for more photos from the event!

Ottawa Comic-Con | May 13-15, 2016

I was finally able to attend an Ottawa Comic-Con… you know, what, 5…6 years later? Better late than never. I also sacrificed a severe amount of sleep to be able to go. I wish I could say it’s because of costume delays, but actually it was because of work. Oh darn those responsibilities. Suffice to say, I had an excellent time helping a couple of friends man their booths *cough* and avoiding the massive crowds where possible.

Little shoutout to Nytro Cosplay  and his friend Spencer (who kept trying to buy things in bottle caps, haha!) in my main photo here…we almost missed each other, but glad they managed to spot me! I also love that we all have different versions of the Pipboy.

I didn’t manage to grab too many photos this year, and primarily because it was so darn busy that I actually wasn’t able able to pull people aside. There were some truly amazing cosplays I saw in person and even in photos that I missed. I was only able to attend Friday and Saturday, but something is better than nothing! Without further adieu, please enjoy!

Neegan and Daryl (The Walking Dead)

My friend Lexa Lefay featured as Cinderella. She didn’t make the costume herself, a friend had made it and exclaimed that she had the excuse to be a princess for a day! Hey, why the heck not!

Simon (Gurren Lagann)

L: Lady Sif (Thor) | M: Kuzco (Emperor’s New Groove) | R: Fleur Delacour (Harry Potter)

L: Fallout Sole Survivor | M: Mad Max | R: Capable & Nux (Mad Max)

Team Fortress 2 … the guy in the baseball outfit jumped in out of nowhere, no idea what series he might be from… haha!

Peekaboo cosplay had created a custom fawn cosplay. I was incredibly intrigued by her lantern… beautifully done! (her cosplays are exquisite!!)

Lana & Archer (Archer). I saw them from afar towards the end of my day, the guys at the booth I was at shouted “LAAAANNNAAA” and apparently that was enough to get their attention (It was pretty funny). I have to say, these two are pretty darn accurate to the show – excellent job!!

We Can Do It - posterized

Lastly, I’ll finish with this – Photographer Stephen Orser did this up for me, which was very kind of him. I love it! 🙂

Kelvin’s Birthday | The big 30!

One of my best and closest friends – Kelvin- just celebrated a milestone! His parents and friends were very eager to make it special for him.

We had an old school type theme, though I had decided before discussing with his mother that I was going to do a “punks not dead” cake, so in the end it worked out pretty well. I spent a lot of time developing a great white cake with black, white and red (albeit, looks pink) icing. Topped with silver edible ‘studs’. The boys aren’t overly fond of fondant, so I did my best to work with purely buttercream frosting. Doesn’t matter anyway, it tasted amazing (if I do say so myself)!

The cake baking I took with snapchat… haha, I was so excited.

So I had found a trick to make pure red icing, but apparently I added too much black to the red, and it ended up turning dark purple. I was really disappointed but improvised and pulled out the black food colouring and went that route instead.

I have learned over my time baking cakes that it’s better to let things sit to cure, if you will. I let the black icing with silver sprinkles sit overnight, and did the remaining decorating the following day.

I did the anarchy symbol on both sides, ‘punx not dead’ one side, and his name on the other. Suffice to say, I’m pleased my writing with my icing is getting much better.

So before I got this all wrapped up, I found this artwork at Toronto Comic-con from an artist, and got it professionally framed. As soon as I saw it I had to get it for him.

Gandalf was having fun playing with the string on his gift, haha.

His mom had a fun time cutting out these skulls and incorporating this into the decor.

Burgers and dogs were ready to go!

Great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors! Country air felt so good for all of us.

Inside, we await cake to be served…

Kelvin’s being a good sport about posing for all the photos I’ve been taking, haha.

Kelvin checking out the cake details, and finally we get to see what it looks like on the inside! I’ll end here with Kelvin opening our gift. Lighting was getting tough though so I decided to stop taking photos.

Thanks for scrolling through. We all had a lovely time!! What better than to spend your birthday with the people who mean the most to you. 🙂

CAPE | April 23-24, 2016

CAPE (Cornwall Area Pop Event) hosted it’s second annual convention. I was told that last year it was only one day, as the Cornwall area do not have their local busses operating on Sundays. This year apparently there were shuttles to help con-goers get to the Benson Centre. I was unfortunately only able to go for a few hours on Saturday, but met a lot of really amazing and talented people. It had such a different dynamic from our usual OCC or PopExpo’s etc. that most cosplayers attend. I even had the pleasure of meeting a couple of celebrities who had a few minutes to spare to chat with me and my friends I was with.

On to the photos!

IMG_3293

The Pirate group! Featuring (L to R): Elizabeth Swann (Pirates of the Caribbean), Hook (Once), Will Turner and Jack Sparrow (PotC). – Truly some great cosplays, level of detail is wonderful… well done!

Ace Ventura Montreal, as I found out later, was a special cosplay guest and he was so funny… very in character, loved it!

My long time friend Tabitha (Maka) and her sister Amanda (Soul Eater Evans) from Soul Eater.

IMG_3296

I bumped into a fellow Fallout survivor!  (his girlfriend took the photo for us)

And he wore his mask for me! Such excellent work put into his armour and weapon. I gotta amp up my Fallout game!

L: Jon Snow (Game of Thrones) | R: Lucy (Fairy Tale) – It was her first convention and I love to support new cosplayers! We all started somewhere!

These lovely folks from Underworld Larp Ottawa who were trying to get us to go out to do some larping. I wish I had time for things like that!

Merida (Brave) and Daisy (Mario)

We also ran into Marie-Claude Bourbonnais as Scorpion from Mortal Combat, not realizing who she was! She was away from her booth, haha. The level of detail on the leather was amazing.

We also had the pleasure of speaking with Barabara Luna, Noelle Hannibal and Dr. StEvil (who came by and teased Amanda’s red eye contacts, saying she should get ‘checked out’). Haha. I cannot wait to attend again next year. It was a great time!

Toronto Comic-Con | March 18-20, 2016

Not too late with this I suppose! With all the photos I took while in Artist Alley I think I did pretty well for myself. I did take quite a few photos, so if you’re new to my page… welcome! Feel free to scroll through the rest of my trip musings to find your photo; but make sure to check out the end to see some important details about your photo! 🙂

So I’m going to start this with my mason jar salads, which I was proud of. I didn’t buy any food while we were at the convention, I dumped these into a big bowl and munched away while in between helping customers.

Featured here is my friend Dex Morgan ‘s booth Geek Charming; selling tees and sweaters of her own design. I have helped her before, it’s a lot of fun! Excuse me while I feature some of her stuff. 🙂

Also our friends over at TPub, featuring UK story Twisted Dark. Ballistic Bambi as Marla from Fight Club.

Okay okay, now on to the cosplayers of TCC! Unfortunately while being stuck in Artist Alley all weekend I only had a few chances to linger into the panels and outside halls, but it’s so great to see so many truly talented people out there! I like to take photos of anyone and everyone’s skill level… though preferably I like to take photos of people from series’ that I recognize and enjoy. Also for the love of all goodness, if I have any incorrect information, please let me know!

Family photo: Finn & Jake (Adventure Time), Rey (Star Wars), Daenerys (GoT)

L: General Hux & Fem-Spock | R: Jack Frost

L: Sailor Mars (Sailor Moon) | R: I’ve seen these types of characters floating around for years but still don’t know what it’s from! But I liked their outfits.

The travelling Star Wars group… 501st Legion

L: General Organa & Rey (Star Wars) | R: Aniken Skywalker (Star Wars)

L: “Randy” Archer (Archer)… funny story with this one, this gentleman was on his phone when I was helping at Stone Cold Creations for a bit and I swirled around recognizing him instantly… “RANDY!” He laughed and on his phone he was like “I’m going to have to put you down for a sec.” He was surprised to see that I recognized him (any true Archer fan would!), and I told him about my Fight Club Pam. Suffice to say, it’s still exciting. | R: Jon Snow, Daenerys and Sansa Stark (GoT)… Also, if Danny is reading this, my friend Dex Morgan is dying to know how you pleated your skirt. She’s been trying to make this cosplay and saw you a few times in awe. haha!

L: Sole Survivor (Fallout4) | C: Marty McFly (Back to the Future) | R: Cosima (Orphan Black) Also can i just say, daaaayum girl, that resemblance is on point!

Commander Shepard (Mass Effect). I was really impressed with the weaponry specifically with his cosplay, especially the omni-tool. As I’m (very slowly *lol*) working on Tali, having an omni-tool would be great… if I could figure out how to make it! Anyway, we caught him on the way out Friday night, which was a nice surprise considering I saw very little Mass Effect cosplays (though TONS of sweaters! Including the one I was sporting Friday, haha!).

Friday night ended with a photo of Dex Morgan, Katie From ShareMyCosplay (press), and Ballistic Bambi enjoying some ramen while back at our condo Friday night. Also a Saturday morning shot of me before we left for the con!

L: Rebel Flight (Star Wars) | C: Kagome (InuYasha) It was really funny how I came to find her, she was walking by and I just shouted “KAGOME!” and she’s like “OMG Finally someone who doesn’t think I’m a sailor scout!” haha. Clearly these people don’t know their sailor scouts all that well! | R: Anya, Orphan (Anastasia)

Ezio (Assassin’s Creed)

L: Rey (Star Wars) | C: I believe these are League of Legend characters, but I’m not entirely sure! | R: Borg (Star Trek); my Trekkie knowledge is a little fuzzy, so I wasn’t sure if they were a particular character or not.

L: I’m honestly not sure where these guys were from, but they were so excited that I took their photo, lol. If anyone knows, please tell me! | R: Butchers (Silent Hill)

Another artist shout out! My friends Julie and Chris, of Popsquatch Designs – featuring Julie and her fun geeky accessories!

L:  Unsure of character name (Brotherhood of the Wolf) | R: Kylo Ren (Star Wars)

L: Kylo Ren (Star Wars) & I’m not entirely sure… I thought he was from Naruto, but couldn’t quite figure it out. | C: Geralt of Rivia (Witcher) | R: Fem-Leonardo (TMNT)

Captain America. But you should know that! 🙂

L: Kaylee (Firefly) | C: Chell (Portal) | R: Finn & Rey (Star Wars)

Black Widow (Avengers Series)

L: Flash & Black Canary (Arrow) | T: Halo | B: Sarah & Cosima (Orphan Black)

Josee and the Pussycat Dolls

Imperial Shadow Trooper (Star Wars)

Cersei (Game of Thrones)

L: Count Dooku & I’m not entirely sure (Star Wars) | R: Obi-wan & Count Dooku (Star Wars)

L: Alice, Queen of Hearts and White Rabbit | C: Oliver – Green Arrow (Arrow) | R: Princess Ariel (Little Mermaid)

L: Game of Thrones group  | R: Robo-cop

My friend Dex Morgan as Claire from Outlander

Vegeta & Goten(?) Super Sayan (Dragonball Z)

Sailor Saturn (Sailor Moon) which was nice to see… very rarely see Saturn or a Pluto around!

Ballistic Bambi as Charlene (Archer) “Out land Country- WOO!”

L & C: Carl (Walking Dead) The joke about the middle photo was that our friend in the booth next to us made a Rick joke meme.. “Hey Carl, I bought you an EYE-PAD.” And our lovely new friend here did not look amused. Haha. | R: Kylo Ren & Rey (Star Wars)

Ottawa PopExpo | Nov 21-22 2015

This comes only a few months late, figured I should probably post these before it gets forgotten forever, and we wouldn’t want that!

With a very busy weekend in my own life I was only able to make it out to Pop Expo for a matter of a few hours on Saturday. In that time I managed to: see my fellow cosplay friends, buy a cosplay approved sword for my costume, get an impromptu professional shoot, and spill Ketchup literally all over me.

I had worn Matsumoto before, though with some improvements I felt a lot better about it… but I forgot my pink scarf! I was very disappointed about that. Overall, it’s an easy costume to wear and super comfortable. I’m not used to weaponry so that aspect was a little awkward but I’ll get the hang of it eventually!

IMG_1680

Original costume designer Anja Takera created such a beautiful dress!

I was honestly super shocked to see a Faith Connor’s floating around, and she was really well done to boot! Mirror’s Edge is one of my favourite games, so this was a very pleasant surprise.

My friend Alex over at Lexa Lafay Cosplay as Connor from Assassin’s Creed!

I was a little unsure about who these two ladies were cosplaying as, but their costumes were very cool!

When I met the Disney villian ladies we were waiting in line for our photoshoots, they were very impressive and the photographer obviously loved them. I also met them again in line for some food… after I had used the Ketchup pump and it splattered all over me and my costume. I warned them about it and we laughed about how they were being extra careful about it so it didn’t happen to them too.

Lastly, I managed to get some of my own photos done, thanks to Droo Photography for a great shoot for Rangiku Matsumoto from Bleach:

DRO_9590

Thoughts on the convention overall:

I have to admit I was a little disappointed. After some discussion with friends, apparently having Will Shatner as a special guest had taken away a lot of the budget that should have gone to the vendor’s necessary and standard needs (like backdrops, table clothes and trash cans). On top of which signage was limited, artist alley was hiding (and cold!), and we were not gifted with any goodie-bags. Food selection was limited, but that’s normal for the EY Centre. It was still a good time, but being there for the few hours that I went was probably all that was needed.
